Reed's Last Day of 7th Grade

It seems like there is a graduation ceremony for anything these days. Preschool Grad, Elementary School, Jr High... Its no wonder they don't have Graduation from Graduation. If you ask me, it is contributing to our society's Over-Inflated-Ego-Problem. And don't get me started on Award's Ceremonies. It would not surprise me if they had an award for the "Best Pencil Holder".
Anyways.... Reed chose to celebrate his last day of 7th grade in a different manner this year. As all of the kids were lined up to leave as the bell rang, someone from the back pushed the line and they all stumbled like a set of Dominoes. Reed tripped over a kid's backpack, and the kid pushed Reed. When Reed realized he was going down, he grabbed the kid and took him with him. Thats when the punching started. They punched and scuffled back and forth and then the kid, realizing he was getting is butt kicked, ran off. Reed walked away un-scathed, but he said the kid was bleeding. And told me he was obviously the victor of the fight.
So, not hearing anything from the school, we called the school to ask about it. They knew nothing. (Surprise, Surprise)
Now Reed has been taught never to start a fight, but he can finish one. So he technically didn't break any rules. I told him to be careful because you never know if someone is armed, or if they are in a gang (the kid was Mexican). Dan congratulated him and proudly made phone calls to spread the gossip. Then Reed received congratulatory phone calls all afternoon some with promises of free lunches.
That night we checked his final grades....which I have been dreading! Because, he has been floating back and forth between D's & F's in some of his classes. We were shocked to see that he had Aced all of his finals and earned B's and C's...(which are totally unacceptable in the large picture, but sooooooo good this year.) He was very dis-organized and didn't turn in alot of work, but he knows the curriculum. What a relief. Dan says I have been living 2 lives this year... Reed's & Mine.... I think he is right.

I'm with you on award ceremonies and graduations! It's all just so self-congratulatory! And for what? Mediocrity? Lame.
